Time a student reading aloud, count the errors, and get words correct per minute and accuracy right away.
These are example numbers. Change anything to start your own.
Readings you add show up here. Give the same reader two or three passages and the list shows the median, the usual score to record.
| Reader | Passage | Words | Errors | Time | WCPM | Accuracy | Remove |
|---|
These are the usual curriculum-based measurement rules. If your screener (DIBELS, Acadience, aimsweb, easyCBM) has its own rules or benchmarks, follow those.
Words correct per minute (WCPM) = (words read − errors) ÷ seconds × 60. A one-minute reading needs no math: it is just words read minus errors.
Accuracy = (words read − errors) ÷ words read. As a common classroom guide, 95% or higher is independent level, 90 to 94% is instructional, and below 90% means the passage is too hard for now.
Comparison norms come from Hasbrouck & Tindal: the 2017 update for grades 1 to 6 and the 2006 study for grades 7 and 8. They describe unpracticed, grade-level passages read aloud for one minute. There are no norms in these studies for kindergarten or grades 9 to 12, so use your own goal there.
