Unit Converter with Dimensional Analysis

Change one unit into another and see every step of the chain, with the units crossing out. Then build a chain yourself.

This is an example. Change the number or the units to make it yours.

Add a fact from your class, like 1 lap = 400 m or 1 mol = 18.02 g. It stays on this device and clears when you close the page.

    The chain

    Step by step

Why does crossing out units work?

Each conversion factor is a fraction whose top and bottom are the same amount, written two ways. 12 inches over 1 foot equals 1, because 12 inches is 1 foot.

Multiplying by 1 never changes how much you have. It only changes the unit you are counting in.

      • A unit on top and the same unit on a bottom divide to 1, so you cross both out.
      • Pick which way up to write each fact so the unit you want gone lands across from itself.
      • Check the units that are left. If they match what the question asks for, the chain is set up right.
